Architect Team Leader - UNRWA - Lebanon

In accordance with established Agency policy and procedures, the incumbent:

(A) Lead, coordinate and guide a small team of architects, assistant architects and a draftsperson in the preparation of preliminary architectural designs, drawings and all other necessary documents for a number of residential and commercial units comprising a block or a number of blocks comprising a package of Nahr El-Bared Camp;
(B) Prepare preliminary, developed and detailed design drawings and documents for the reconstruction of Nahr-El-Bared Camp or adjacent area, as appropriate, including production of the necessary computer aided drawings;
(C) Support the UNRWA team of support staff working within Nahr El-Bared Reconstruction Commission (NBRC) on the implementation of the participatory planning/design process with the community, based in the results of the property validation and deduction process, in particular to obtain the final signature of each family’s designated representative on the plans for their unit(s);
(D) Work on residential urban design, deriving maximum benefit from open spaces, ensuring consistency with an improved overall vision for the urban design/layout of the camp;
(E) Ensure on-site compliance with the designs approved by the families and subsequently the Government, through site inspections, assessment of construction work and reporting and, if directly designated as a Site-Project Architect, facilitate coordination between the Site Office and Design Section, prepare designs and drawings for any new elements required in their “site-project area”, update plans to remove discrepancies with reality, and improve future designs to increase the units’ functionality or reduce time/cost of their design and construction;
(F) Meet various counterparts in connection with the part(s) of the site/project under their responsibility, including the consultant engineer, the contractor, and the families, the latter in support of the NRBC team in dealing with families’ appeals about area or complaints about designs or other technical issues;
(G) Perform other such duties as may be assigned by the Head of Design.

- University degree (BA or BS) in Architecture.
- Minimum of Ten years’ relevant experience in architectural design. Formal training in computer aided design.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English and Arabic.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
i) Advanced degree in Architecture;
ii) Knowledge of the development, planning and architectural aspects of the Middle East and Lebanon to particular;
iii) Valid driving license.

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
Salary: Monthly salary (full package) USD $3,500.-
Contract Duration: One Year (Extendable depending on the availability & continuous need for the post).

EQUIVALENCY
Candidates with an equivalent combination of relevant academic qualifications, professional training and progressive work experience may also be considered.

As a member of the United Nations system, UNRWA maintains a close relatives’ policy. In this regard, if a candidate has a close relative (mother, father, brother, sister, son or daughter) who is already employed by the Agency, he/she can only be employed if the Agency is unable to find another suitable candidate.

UNRWA staff members with fixed term appointments may not be considered for any consultant/contractor position while in service. Candidates who are no longer employed by the Agency must have a minimum of 3 months break in service before they apply to any consultant/contract positions.

TECHNICAL & PRACTICAL TESTS REQUIRED:
Short-listed candidates will sit for one test:
- Written technical test (100%).
The top 05 scoring candidates in the written technical test given that none have scored less than 50%; will be invited to interview.
